ATRP Solutions' Team
Our Leadership

ATRP Solutions founders’ and staff are the most experienced team that could be assembled for atom transfer radical polymerization. They bring over 70 years of polymer chemistry experience and over 30 years of ATRP technology-specific experience to the company.
Randy Eager, CEO

Randy Eager, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, has more than 27 years of successful management and product commercialization experience, including the selling and marketing of technical products and services to manufacturers and other commercial customers. This includes eleven years in the polymer industry, seven of which were in the polymer division of BASF developing applications with OEMs around the world. At his first start-up in the polymer industry, Randy was Vice President of Sales and Marketing with TriTech Group, Inc. Additionally, he spent five years as a management consultant focused on the development of strategic plans for multiple customers in a variety of industries with General Management Technologies, Inc.

Prior to ATRP Solutions, Randy spent three years at Innovation Works, the third largest seed stage investor in the country, as an Executive in Residence. His role was sourcing of deals, mentoring CEOs, and participating as a board observer for the sixteen portfolio companies in which he led the investment. Prior to Innovation Works, Randy co-founded his second company, DeisgnAdvance Systems, a Carnegie Mellon University spin-off that he led as CEO from company inception to successfully raising over $6 million. In less than two years, he built the team and secured contracts from the likes of Cisco, Intel, Motorola, Apple, and others. DesignAdvance was acquired by EMA Design Automation the company's North American distributor. Prior to DesignAdvance Systems, Randy was a licensing officer in the Technology Transfer Office at Carnegie Mellon University where he licensed technology to industry and worked with Carnegie Mellon spin-off companies in various capacities. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering from Michigan State University and received his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh's Katz School of Business.
Patrick McCarthy, President and Founder

Patrick McCarthy, President and Founder has worked within chemicals, high technologies and research sectors for the past 20 years. During this time he has had a variety of roles covering general and executive business management, corporate strategy, new product development and innovation. His experience includes P&L management, R&D leadership, new business & product development and board of directors service. Prior to founding ATRP Solutions, he worked for Dionex Corporation, a Silicon Valley-based analytical instrument company and Los Alamos National Laboratories, the largest government research center in the United States. Patrick has been successful in taking new businesses and new products from conception to commercialization within $500 million in revenue corporations and within new ventures. Patrick’s background includes a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Rhode Island and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business.

Patrick has been recognized for building one of the top 50 technology companies in Pittsburgh by the Pittsburgh Technology Council with two TECH 50 finalist awards in the rising star (2009) and advanced manufacturing (2010) categories. Most recently, he was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during a ceremony in Washington D.C. as a contributor to the 2009 EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Award given to Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski.
Dr. Wojciech Jakubowski, VP

Dr. Jakubowski received his doctorate degree in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. He has authored over 25 scientific publications and 6 US patent applications. Among Dr. Jakubowski's inventions is ICAR and ARGET ATRP which enable a 1000 fold reduction in catalyst concentration for the ATRP process. This invention has reduced the cost of using ATRP and made the process more environmentally friendly. Dr. Jakubowski was recognized as a contributor to the 2009 EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Award given to Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski. At ATRP Solutions, Dr. Jakubowski continues to advance the science of ATRP by inventing new processes and new products.
Dr. Laura Mueller, Senior Scientist

Dr. Mueller received her doctorate degree in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010. Her research focus during her graduate studies was to expand the scope of ATRP while utilizing low concentrations of copper catalyst. She is an author of more than 15 publications related to this work and co-inventor on 2 patent applications. Currently she is applying her experience and knowledge of ATRP in her position as Senior Scientist at ATRP Solutions.
Prof. Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, Founder

Dr Matyjaszewski invented ATRP technology and has pioneered the field of ATRP focusing on both mechanism elucidation and new material synthesis. Prof. Matyjaszewski has authored over 900 scientific papers, 60 book chapters and filed 40 patent applications related to ATRP technology making him the worlds leader in ATRP technology. Prof. Matyjaszewski is currently the J.C. Warner Professor of Natural Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University.
Dr. James Spanswick, Founder

Dr. Spanswick spent 25 years at Amoco Chemicals (now part of BP) focusing on the development and commercialization of polymeric materials. He has worked with Carnegie Mellon University and to commercialize ATRP by establishing the CRP Consortium.
